MOUZENS

The village of Mouzens, 243 inhabitants and 800 hectars area, is settled next to the Dordogne river, 5 km downhill from Saint-Cyprien.

Mouzens shows a variety of territories: plains, hills, dales, forests and cultivations, and wonderful lanscapes.

In the parking, next to the townhall, you can find a board and some leaflets which describe the hiking trails of Mouzens.

1. Altarpiece:
Classed as historical monument, this altarpiece comes from the abbey of Fongauffier, today disappeared. During the XVIIth century, this piece was consecrated to Saint Benoît and his sister Sainte Scholastique.

2.Church
The roman choir dates back to the XIth or XIIth century. It has probably been built upon an ancient worship site, dug into the rock.

The nave and the cemetery have been modified in 1888 (construction of a bell tower).

3. Castle of Monsec (historical monument): Settled on a rock spur which bord the Dordogne River, this fortified house was built upon the relics of an "oppidum" (fortified gallo-roman village).

Its geographical position allowed the surveilllance of the river and the control of the ships which sailed up the Dordogne.

(Possibility of visiting the castle during the "journées du patrimoine" (cultural heritage days) and on demand, for groups of utmost five people).
